Firearm discharged in Newton Mearns post office robbery
Police Police are reviewing CCTV footage and carrying out door-to-door inquiries

Police are hunting two masked men who discharged a firearm during a post office robbery in East Renfrewshire.

The men threatened a female member of staff at the post office counter in Martin McColls on Mearns Road, Newton Mearns, at about 09:10.

A shot was fired before they escaped with a four-figure sum of cash towards Dunure Place. No one was injured.

It is believed they then got into a blue Ford Transit van, which was later found by police.

Police said three members of staff in the shop and three customers were uninjured but left very badly shaken by their ordeal.
Forensic examination

The van is now being examined by forensic officers.

The first suspect is described as white and of heavy build.

He was wearing a black or dark-coloured hooded top with three red stripes down the length of the arms, grey trousers or tracksuit bottoms with a design on the left rear pocket. He was also wearing gloves.

The second suspect is described as white, about 5ft 7in (1.7m) tall and of slim to medium build.

He was wearing a dark-coloured jacket, dark-coloured trousers and black shoes. He was also wearing gloves.

Det Insp Gary Thomson, of Strathclyde Police, said: "An extensive investigation is ongoing in the local area to gather more information on the two men responsible.

"The police helicopter assisted in the search and officers are currently gathering CCTV footage and carrying out door-to-door inquiries in an effort to gather more details on this crime."

Det Insp Thomson urged anyone who may have seen the men acting suspiciously in the area, or anyone with information, to contact police.
